Courtyard garden, Margit ház
Project and location
Courtyard garden, Margit ház, Budapest, District II.
What we did
The site is a beautiful Art Nouveau block of flats with a run-down, strictly-utilitarian courtyard. When the local municipality issued a grants program for courtyard greening, we produced a couple of rough sketches for alternatives to make the courtyard a welcoming, green community space, taking into accounts its shady conditions. Features include a bubbling fountain, built-in solid oak benches, raised brick beds with shade-tolerant perennials such as Astilbe and Heuchera, a solitary Japanese maple, terracotta urns with annuals, and trellises for ivy to conceal the building's trash containers.
